Syrian Refugee Program

Recently, Canada announced a plan to settle 25,000 Syrian refugees into Canada. In a statement from the newly elected Liberal government, they would settle 10,000 by the end of the year and a further 15,000 by the end of February. The announcement comes at volatile times. The recent attack in Paris has left many westerners suspicious of letting in refugees on the fear that some of them may be terrorists. However, the government has shown no signs of stopping, although the refugees are limited to women, children, and men who only come with families. There has been some criticism from Canadians, stating that the policy is sexist since it does not allow single men to apply to come to Canada. However, there must be a line drawn somewhere as to weighing the security of the nation as a whole and the plight of the refugees.

There is no certain way of telling if the people let into Canada will commit acts of terror. These fears were further exacerbated when one of the Paris terrorists was revealed to have made his way from Syria to France, tagging along with refugees. It is said that all it takes is one apple to spoil the bunch. All it took was one false refugee to make people in Europe and around the world distrustful of the all Syrian refugees.

In reality, the problems that face Canada pale in comparison to the problems facing other countries taking in many more refugees. Jordan has taken in nearly 2 million Syrian refugees along with Lebanon and Turkey taking in about 1 million each.
